Sterilization Gases (EtO & PPO)

Sterilization gas mixtures typically consist of a sterilant gas (Ethylene Oxide – EtO, or Propylene Oxide – PPO) combined with a diluent such as carbon dioxide (CO₂). These mixtures are used to sterilize medical devices and other heat-sensitive products that cannot withstand high temperatures or steam sterilization.

Role of CO₂

• Acts as a diluent to reduce flammability and volatility.
• Ensures safer handling while maintaining sterilization efficiency.

Applications:

• Medical Devices: Sterilization of heat-sensitive instruments, including plastic-based devices.
• Food & Other Materials: Fumigation of certain heat-sensitive foods and specialty products.

Important Safety Considerations:

• EtO/PPO are flammable and potentially carcinogenic.
